Rise According to new data from the United Kingdom’s National Health Service, about one hundred Scottish citizens have limbs amputated every month due to health conditions they developed as a result of being obese. Research conducted in the Locomotion Lab at the University of Colorado found that running with shoes on may be more efficient for the body than running barefoot. Jason Franz, a doctoral student and the head of the study, and his colleagues had test subjects run on treadmills while wearing lightweight shoes and while barefoot with weights attached.

The researchers recorded their levels of oxygen intake and carbon dioxide exhalation and found that the runners used three to four percent more energy without shoes. According to Franz, this might be due to the increased amount of effort the body has to exert to cushion the impact of the feet without shoes.

surgeriesTripp Halstead of Atlanta was hit by a tree branch in 2012 and had numerous surgeries since. His most recent surgery was surgery of the feet. When the tree branch hit Halstead, the two year-old suffered severe trauma to the brain and his parents have noticed that his feet have not grown since. His parents and doctors are now hoping that this latest procedure will allow the boy to walk again someday instead of using a wheelchair to get around. The surgery lasted around seven hours, but hospital staff claims that everything went according to plan. Nurses even created his casts based off Cars, Halstead’s favorite movie. “I put more emphasis on the positive,” said Tripps’ mother, Stacy Halstead, “That one day he would be able to walk and run like the other kids and that seemed to relax him.”

Exercise for Your Feet


If you spend most of your time on your feet, or don’t either way your feet should deserve attention. There are many people who exercise regularly and still don’t spend enough time to care for their feet. Exercises


Toe rise – this exercise involves standing on the tip-toes for a count of 15 seconds, then resting your feet on ground. This exercise should be repeated three times a day to strengthen the feet. 


Toe Pick-ups – the toes are exercises that are done by picking up small items using your toes. This helps strengthen the muscles on the upper part of the feet. Three sets along with 15 seconds being held should be completed. Small items like marbles or stationary will work.


Ankle Pump – can be performed upwards or downwards. The workout can be completed both ways at the same time. This involves flexing the foot either towards the shin or to the ground. This makes the foot work very well, working large parts of the muscles.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that causes pain, swelling, and joint stiffness in the feet. What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Al Jefferson suffered an injury Sunday against Miami. (USATSI)Al Jefferson, center for the Charlotte Bobcats, hurt his foot during the first game of the Bobcats/Miami Heat match-up during the NBA playoffs last month. He felt something rip while on the court, but after taking two painkiller shots he was able to get back in the game.

 

Jefferson scored 18 points and got 10 rebounds, but Charlotte ended up losing 88-99 anyway. Later he was diagnosed with a strained plantar fasciitis, and it’s believed that the onset of this painful condition contributed to his poor performance.
